USA Weather Guide for First-Time Visitors: What to Expect
The USA is closer to a continent than a single climate zone. A well-planned trip accounts for regional weather instead of relying on a national forecast.
Northeast and New England
New York, Boston and New England have four distinct seasons: warm humid summers, colourful autumns, variable springs and cold winters. Weather can shift quickly, especially by the coast or in the mountains.
South and Florida
The South is generally hot and humid from late spring through early autumn. Florida is warm year-round, with summer afternoon storms and a hurricane season that deserves attention when planning late-summer or autumn travel.
Southwest and California
Arizona, Nevada and Utah can be extremely hot in summer but are comfortable in spring and autumn. Coastal California is milder than many visitors expect; San Francisco and Big Sur often need a jacket even in summer.
Rockies and the Pacific Northwest
Mountain weather is defined by elevation, not just season. Expect cooler nights, sudden storms and snow lingering well into spring. The Pacific Northwest has dry, sunny summers but wetter months from autumn through spring.
How to use forecasts wisely
Check the forecast a week before departure and again each morning during a road trip. For mountains, coasts and parks, look at the destination’s elevation and local alerts. Pack adaptable clothing rather than trusting one long-range forecast.
