Best USA Road Trips by Season: Where to Drive and When
A great USA road trip is less about covering the most miles and more about choosing a route that suits the season. Weather, daylight and road access can transform the same route from stressful to unforgettable.
Spring: California coast and the Southwest
Drive the Pacific Coast in spring for green hills, wildflowers and mild temperatures. Alternatively, build a Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon loop while the desert is still comfortable for walking.
Book coastal hotels for weekends and leave extra time for scenic stops.
Summer: New England and the Pacific Northwest
Summer is ideal for Maine’s coastal towns, Olympic National Park, Oregon’s beaches and Washington’s mountains. Long daylight hours give you more time for hiking, ferry rides and small-town stops.
Reserve ferries, national-park accommodation and popular rental cars well in advance.
Autumn: New England foliage loop
A Boston, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine route is the classic autumn drive. Choose a flexible route so you can follow the best colour, and avoid overloading the itinerary with too many one-night stops.
Winter: Florida Keys and Southern California
For a warm, easy winter road trip, drive from Miami through the Florida Keys or explore Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Diego. These routes avoid snow-driving concerns while still offering beaches, food and scenic detours.
Road-trip essentials
Use a realistic daily driving limit, reserve key overnight stops, keep offline maps and always check fuel range in remote areas. A flexible itinerary with two or three-night stays feels much more enjoyable than racing between landmarks.
