When Is the Best Time to Visit America? A Season-by-Season Guide

June 10, 20268 min read

There is no single best month for every American holiday. The country spans tropical beaches, desert parks, snowy mountains and four-season cities, so the best time depends on your route and priorities.

The short answer

For a first multi-city trip, late April to May and September to October are often the easiest choices. Temperatures are generally comfortable, nature is colourful, and the busiest school-holiday period has usually not begun or has just ended.

Summer is best for national parks, Alaska and long road trips. Autumn is outstanding for New England foliage and mild southern cities. Winter is ideal for ski holidays, festive city breaks and warm-weather escapes in Florida, Hawaii and the Southwest.

Spring: March to May

Spring is a smart value season for Washington, DC, California, the Southwest and many southern states. Arizona and Utah are pleasant before summer heat arrives, while California’s coast and national parks feel fresh and green.

Weather can still change quickly in northern states and high-altitude parks. Check road-opening dates before planning Yosemite, Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain National Park.

Summer: June to August

Summer brings the longest days and the broadest choice of outdoor activities. It is the prime period for Alaska cruises, hiking in the Rockies, Maine’s coastline and family road trips. July and August can be very hot in the South, deserts and popular cities.

Book major parks, popular hotels and timed-entry attractions early. Start hikes early, carry water, and keep a flexible plan for thunderstorms or wildfire-related closures.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn combines lighter crowds with warm days in many regions. September is excellent for California, the Pacific Northwest and national parks after peak summer. October is the classic month for New England foliage, while November works well for New Orleans, Charleston and the Southwest.

Fall colours move from north to south and from high elevations to lowlands, so exact peak weeks vary each year.

Winter: December to February

Winter rewards travellers who plan around it. Ski areas in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Vermont are lively, while New York and Chicago offer festive events and quieter museums. For warmth, consider Hawaii, South Florida, Southern California or Arizona.

Snow can affect driving and flight schedules. Build extra time into a cold-region itinerary and choose accommodation close to your priority experiences.
